140 Step Project
A 1 track 140 / deep dubstep single (8m 56s) — released July 4th 2025 on Fluid Ounce
A 9-minute sonic journey unfolds like a bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka, with "140 Step Project" cutting through a shifting landscape of broken rhythms, distorted kotos, haunting daiko and serene chaos. Moments of stillness and precision crash into stuttering crescendos. Delicate textures clash with heavy broken beats. It's cinematic, unpredictable, and unmistakably Daisuke Tanabe.
Electronic yet organic, clinical yet emotional, this is music made from fragments and the classic Tanabe stutter-step, all glued together with glitchy finesse.
About the Artist
Daisuke Tanabe is a boundary-pushing producer from Chiba, Japan, now based in Tokyo. A former art student with a background in sculpture, he spent formative years in London, where his sound was first recognised at CDR events curated by Tony Nwachukwu (Attica Blues) & Gavin Alexander (Nepa Recordings). His track "Sand Hill" landed on the inaugural CDR release, at the same time as releasing his first 12" on Fluid Ounce Records, comprising 'Gas', 'CNST', 'Model' & 'Fog', before being picked up by other tastemakers. He later featured on Fluid Ounce Presents… with his classic 'Blue Towel', 'Stuck' and 'Voice Wave' cuts.
Drawing from hip hop, breakbeat, jazz, folk, and glitch electronics, Daisuke creates tracks that are atmospheric and intricate - playful in one moment, devastating in the next. He's released music on a range of respected labels and performed alongside the likes of Zero dB and Onra, earning a reputation for transporting live sets where instrumental hip hop merges with ambient textures and stuttered percussion. This new release captures his signature precision and offbeat aesthetic: broken beauty carved from the everyday.
